Vibraphonist Behn Gillece, from the Philadelphia area, started playing music as a percussionist at age 14. He made a full-time commitment to the vibraphone at age 22, influenced by such greats as Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson. Since moving to New York in 2006 he has had the opportunity to play with some great musicians including David Hazeltine, Spike Wilner, Ryan Kisor, Joe Magnarelli, Joel Frahm, Steve Wilson, Paul Bollenback, and many others.
Gillece has played at the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Kimmel Center, Smalls Jazz club, Fat Cat, Chris' Jazz Cafe, Ortlieb's Jazz Haus, and others. Gillece also appeared at jazz and music festivals worldwide including the North Sea, Monteaux, Nice, Molde, Ghent, Montreal, and Toronto festivals.
As a co-leader of a jazz ensemble with tenor saxophonist Ken Fowser, he recently recorded "Full View", which was released by Positone in 2009. The recording includes pianist David Hazeltine, and features some of Gillece's original compositions. The Fowser/Gillece group is also in the process of writing for a new record, which will be released in the Spring of 2010.
Gillece can also be heard on singer/songwriter Melody Gardot's new album entitled "My One and only Thrill", which was released by Verve in 2009. Gillece finished his Master's degree at SUNY Purchase College.
Recently he performed in the 2008 PASIC Jazz Improvisation compeition, which he took 1st place.
